My Dream Is Yours

This is possibly my favorite project to date because it has such personal touches added within it to always remind a very special baby girl of her grandmothers love.

I had created a similar design about a year ago that my customer had fallen in love with so when she had gotten the wonderful news of a new baby girl coming to the family she was looking for a nice diaper changing station -I had a very special plan to repurpose this retro buffet into the diaper station and incorporate very special personal hints of grandmother within the actual design itself!

This particular customer is a jazz and classic guitarist so the perfect addition was to incorporate little hints of her very own sheet music within the feathers themselves. One of the songs incorporated in a feather was called "My Dream Is Yours", the name I chose for this post. We also decided it would be fun to pull the lavender tone into the feathers using some extra scraps of the very same wall paper from the grandmothers home.

Mixed media with sheet music, wall paper then a touch of lavender paint on the tips of the feather.

I just simply ripped the paper off in long strips so the shape would mimic a feather. You can use anything personal you like, pages from a favorite book, a special hymn, what about using a handwritten letter from your grandmother?

What are some other ideas where you could put a very personal spin on something that is otherwise a common piece?  I would love to hear about them!

Oh and don't forget to put extra attention into the knobs, these are crystal drawer knobs that are just absolutely stunning! Think of the pulls and knobs as the earrings that complete the final look of an evening gown.

Tropical Boho for my little lazy river town

Nothing welcomes spring and generates excitement like seeing bright and vibrant colors, so that is just what I set out to do with the Spring/Summer Girl UPcycled Studio window design for the season. Is there anything more cheerful than seeing a warm tropical setting, something that reminds me of all those beachfront vacations I've taken throughout the years! This is my tropical tribute to my community in our lazy little river town, I think it will make them smile!

I knew when I spotted this big beautiful vintage peacock chair at an instant that I wanted to do a bright ombré paint technique to her so I started with (Debi's Design Diary DIY paint) the color "Mermaid Tail" at the bottom, I mean really...with that name I just had to! Then the next layer is "old 57" which I applied full strength. As I moved up the chair I just simply started to dilute the old 57 shade with "Vintage Linen" until the very top was eventually full strength vintage linen.

Next was to create the large scale leaves, we chose tropical shapes for our particular theme.

And just why you ask do I not just buy them?? Because I'm promoting as much locally handmade products as possible in the studio so I want the front window to display  handmade hand touched UPcycled and repurposed items whenever possible.

A special thanks going out to Christine Drozda and her daughter Madeline for helping me on this, it made it so much fun with you two!

we just sketched out random tropical leaf shapes of poster board and then cut them out.

When painting the leaves do not dilute this thick clay based paint as it will give the leaves a thicker yet pliable finish. I also painted in a V like angle to mimic the natural patern of a leaf. Add touches of Golden Ticket to add highlight to the front of leaves.  For added effect, you can crumple the poster board before painting then dry brush for a textured vein effect.

The case of the Misfit Furniture

Transformations of Upcycled furniture using faux paint techniques with Diy Paint from Debis's Design Diary, Why DIY Paint you may ask??

Debis Design Diary DIY Paint is unlike any other brand that I know of because it is clay-based.  Many brands may say they have clay added to their paint BUT a CLAY BASED is rare because it more expensive to produce since it takes so much extra pigment to successfully color a clay based paint, add to that that our pigments are a premium no VOC pigment and you have a very rich and exclusive premium quality paint. The clay base creates great adhesion, a beautiful flat chalky finish, ability to create intense texture or a smooth finish and depth of color that is magnificent. DIY  Paint wet distresses easily yet cures to a super durable finish, it's virtually oder free ( except the earthy clay scent) and it's is one of the purest  most environmentally friendly paints made.

Amazing Grace

Introducing "

", I don't know how much you know about this lovely girl but the word out on the street is that she is just simply "Amazing!".

This old tattered and scuffed up piece took inspiration from the classic favorite hymn "amazing grace".

I had found some very old hymn books at a local garage sale where a lovely family of Mennonites lived, their children gathered and eagerly helped me with all my items out to the car and curiously asked what I would do with the items-as I told them of my plans on how I would use the sheet music from the hymn books, all of their eyes just lit up with excitement! I knew I had to make this piece extra special in the spirit of those children-and so begins this journey.

I always like to do any sanding thats needed first, so out came my my handy dandy rotary sander for this job and i must say it finished up pretty quickly.

Next I chose my colors, in this case I'm using General Finishes "Halcyon Blue" along with "Millstone". The colors turned out absolutely beautiful and the application was just smooth, silky and leveled out wonderfully!

(No, I do not sell paint, I like to try out various brands and use them accordingly, I also like to mix my own colors and styles so ... that was purely an unbiased opinion and is "just my own opinion", you should always use what you personally like and are comfortable with).

I love the contrast of crisp clean paint along with richly stained wood so next

I made sure the counter was free of any dust and then chose General Finishes "Java Gel Stain" to use as the finish.

I applied it in a nice even coat with just a simple foam brush in a open and ventilated area.

Next, use a clean rag or T-shirt to wipe off any excess stain making sure you are working in the same direction of the grain.

What an absolutely lovely rich finish that Java Gel gave! I couldn't be happier!

Now for the "artsy fartsy" part! I Decoupaged the sheet music to the top drawer and the cabinet panels with Mod Podge. I like to kinda lay out my random design first as shown above.

Next, brush on a thin even layer of Mod Podge working in small areas. Use a soft cloth to wipe and smooth out any bumps or air holes you may see until the pages are glued flat.

After it dries, I like to take a small piece of fine sand paper -sanding off or away from the edges for a crisp clean line finish.

Edges are now smooth and have a finished look, I am ready to do a little artwork as the hymn pages serve as the perfect canvas for this!

I chose to use some of the words from the classic favorite hymn "Amazing Grace" (also I made sure I decoupage the Amazing Grace sheet music front and center).

In keeping the thought and the spirit if those sweet children in mind I decided to keep the artwork light, cheerful and whimsical. You can get soo many ideas for your furniture work by learning about artistic techniques and taking art classes, this will always help give you fresh ideas that you can incorporate or translate into your home decor or furniture pieces.

When the artwork was finished, I applied a couple of layers of the Mod Podge over the painted artwork, make sure you sand between each coat to smooth over any page edges that are rough.

And the en end result is a sweet fresh updated "One-Of-A-King" finish that is sure to bring a smile to anyone's face!

"How Sweet The Sound"

"Once Lost"

"Now Found"

I hope you had fun with me on this project, I love to interact with all of you and would love to hear about your one of a kind projects that you have done, or maybe even some products you have used to get a specific look or texture, I'm always looking to learn about great new techniques -so don't be shy, stop by my blog or any of my socials and say hi!

-Until next time, keep those creative ideas flowin' and those brushes wet!
